Once again, I write after so long which was about 7 months ago this time. So quick update, I did once again switch jobs, I recently started a new job as a Senior Solutions Engineer at VMware. Super excited about this new role and getting deeper knowledge of the VMware portfolio and finally get that lab up and running like I've been talking about for who knows how long now.
So a couple month into my new role, there have been a couple things that have been very interesting to me. First, like I mentioned briefly in a previous post, the VMware Cloud Foundation and Hybrid solutions are super cool with the addition of Google Cloud and now even Oracle cloud. Aside from that, the Workspace One platform seems like it should be an awesome addition to a customers environment, given some of the user experiences in my previous roles, with App Catalogs and SSO clearly makes the end users life simpler and streamlined.

I guess you could say that neglect is an understatement, I sincerely apologize Weebly for not having a conversation with you more often (lol). I just today realized it's been about 8 months since I last posted here, but oh well what can you do. With work being busy including work travel, school, and learning my job and technology, this blog went on the back-burner. With work travel slowing down a bit and the semester coming to an end last week, I finally find myself catching a breath and sleeping in.
This morning I had a thought about one of my previous posts over a year ago in regards to the next technology trend, to which more and more it appears that next trend appears to be a hybrid cloud/multi cloud strategy. With the release VMware on AWS a couple years ago and now the agreement with Microsoft, it appears the market is heading in that direction with the flexibility of having workloads on premise with the ability to live migrate into a cloud without downtime and having to re-engineer an application. Joining the federal government as a contractor as a college student in my early 20’s felt like an incredible blessing, especially during a time where many people my age graduating college were struggling to find anything outside retail type roles. Of course my journey as a contractor led to a full time Tier 2 help desk role, eventually leading to a role on the virtualization team. About 2 or 3 years ago, I felt like I was at a crossroads where I felt like I was pushing the boundary of a glass ceiling and I wasn’t feeling challenged. My two options were I either would stick with the government for years to come (and potentially regret it) or go outside of my comfort zone to realize my full potential in the private sector.
As some of my friends can tell you, I went on a couple interviews here and there with some job offers (that didn’t fit what I was looking for) and some interviews where I knew a job offer was coming (but never did). Fast forward to couple months ago, I interviewed for my current role and quite literally 4 to 5 hours after my final interview, I received a call from the recruiter with a job offer. While I was beyond thrilled about the job and the offer I just received, but shortly after a fear and nervousness kicked in. The thought of leaving the agency that had been my home for over 8 years and the comfort of a federal job versus the scary private sector. In the end, I’m sure everyone knows what route I ended up choosing and I would say about 4 months into the decision, I am not regretting any part of it and looking forward, I am beyond exited about what the future holds in my career. If you read some of my older posts, you may recall my back and forth on how I wanted to proceed with my home lab build out (Intel NUC vs Supermicro). After doing some research (and the fact that I now work for DellEMC) I figured I'd look into some different options in addition to what I had researched in the past. I think i've settled on the fact that I'll probably end up going with the prebuilt Dell PowerEdge T330 (I'm pretty sure the fact that I work there may have swayed my thought process just a bit).
Now with this whole process, it somewhat made me come to a realization how do I really want to go the route of build or buy prebuilt. Things seem to have come full circle from the perspective of, the VxRail appliance is a node in which everything is prebuilt where everything is done for you and ready to go vs. building everything from scratch. It just makes me think how beneficial it could be to have everything pre-configured versus spending hours upon hours to get everything set up. As I become more and more neglectful of posting on here, I do have to admit the new position has been a bit of an adjustment, not in a bad way at all but just the sheer amount of information being fed to me (which was to be expected as with any job). I feel that I have a good basis of the technology that I'm working with, but the more intricate details and knowledge will come as the days and weeks go on. At that time, I'll be sure to pivot back towards making this blog more technical as opposed to periodic job updates.
